The ERCO building has been regarded as historical - there is a good deal of information about this and about the history of ERCO here. (pdf, opens in a new window)

Question: does anyone know the history of the ERCO logo?

Gary Klinger asks: During my retirement I have been trying to identify several lighters in my collection. The most difficult one, I believe, pertains to ERCO. Your website has provided a wealth of information that may lead to confirmation of that belief. I am attaching two photos that eventually led me to your site.

The first [1] is a cropped photo of a 1946 ad placed in Flying Magazine. It depicts in lower left corner the logo I am investigating. It is an ad placed when ERCO was producing the airplane ERCOUPE. It is the only logo I have found that matches the logo on my lighter (Lighter [2]). The lighter is dated 1958 or 1959. I believe this lighter may have been used for employee recognition by Nuclear Products - ERCO Division at the Riverdale, Maryland plant.

I am trying to determine if ERCO continued to use this logo as a company or divisional logo thru the many acquisitions and mergers. I have contacted you because of your in depth history of ERCO included in your website. During your collection of information for company history and lineage, have you ever come across or have knowledge pertaining to this unidentified logo? I would certainly appreciate any additional input, information, or search suggestions you may have regarding this matter. This has been, by far, the most difficult and interesting search I have done to date. Your website has been very informative and has provided key information that is very limited on the web. Thank you.
